Orange Peel Extract vs Acid Reflux?

As the battle against acid reflux continues, we move from apples to oranges — from apple cider vinegar to orange peel extract.

This natural weapon against GERD, usually taken in pill form, has come into vogue within the past few years. Like all acid reflux remedies, orange peel extract works for some people but not others, though this particular remedy has a better success rate than some.

In one study, 90 percent of the participants said their heartburn was relieved within 14 days of starting to take orange peel extract, and nearly one-third said their symptoms were gone within two days. Furthermore, participants reported they still had no symptoms as long as 35 days after the trial begin, even though they had stopped taking the pills after day 20.

Most heartburn sufferers who have found relief through orange peel extract probably don’t care HOW it works, as long as it works. But still, we humans are an inquisitive species. Researchers aren’t completely unified on why orange peel extract is as effective as it is, but they have a few theories.

One idea is that orange peel extract helps the esophagus move food down into the stomach more quickly and effectively. The less time food hangs around in the esophagus, the less chance there is for acid to build up.

It is also believed that orange peel extract is a surfactant, i.e., something that reduces liquids’ surface tension. If the orange peel extract reduces surface tension within the fluids in the stomach, that lowers the chances for something to splash the fluids up into the esophagus. No fluids in the esophagus means no acid reflux.

Does orange peel extract have any side effects? Just one: It apparently helps prevent cancer. In lab studies, the supplement has prevented several types of cancer, including breast cancer and lung cancer. Researchers believe orange peel extract hinders the growth and development of cancer cells. Why it does that, exactly, they’re not sure.

The problem with many acid reflux remedies is that they reduce the amount of acid in the stomach. That may sound like a good solution to the problem, but it’s not. There’s SUPPOSED to be acid in your stomach. GERD is caused by acid bubbling up from the stomach into the esophagus. In other words, acid isn’t the problem; it’s the location of the acid. One of the benefits of orange peel extract is that it doesn’t lower the natural acidity of your stomach. Instead, it works to keep the acid out of your esophagus and in your stomach, where it belongs.

Doctors generally recommend that if patients choose to try orange peel extract, they take 1,000 mg of it every other day for 20 days. For that reason, companies that market orange peel extract often sell their product in packages of 10.

Americans spend billions of dollars every year on GERD treatments, some of which work and some of which do not. Orange peel extract isn’t terribly pricey — usually around $25 for a package of 10 pills — and its rate of effectiveness is impressive. As word spreads of its usefulness, it may become the new go-to solution for acid reflux.

I’ve tried Orange Peel extract several times and while it seems to help somewhat it has never “cured” my GERD problem. That said, I think I’m just going to add it to my regimen of GERD management.

Lately, I’ve given Refluxamine a try and it too seems to help quite a bit but so far does not appear to be a “cure” for GERD although it may yet be possible to rely only on it and possibly get off PPIs and the histamine meds like Pepcid AC and Zantac. I’ve only taken it for about 10 days and the folks selling it say give it a month so I’ve got a ways to go. Nevertheless, I can see some improvement at this point. I would be interested in your take on Refluxamine.

    Thanks,

    Hi Bill
Glad that the orange peel has helped with your symptoms. As for Refluxamine, having looked at the ingredients, they do seem to be effective for reducing acid reflux and GERD. As you say it ’seems to help quite a bit’ I would give it a little longer, however, if you’re at all concerned have a quick chat with your doctor.

Rather than buy pills, is their any problem with simply eating orange peel?

Hi Ron, the reason the pills are so effective is the orange peel extract in tablets is in concentrated form. You would have to eat an awful lot of orange peel to get the same benefit, which may have unwanted side effects. However, if you are keen to try it, keep a food diary and make a note of symptoms so you can see if you are having any improvement.

In the above, the words Mail and Website are ambiguous; do these mean email address or what? I provided my email address.

My question is: Regarding people who take orange peel extract as specified (one every other day, for 20 days or for 30 days), is there any evidence that any benefits from taking the orange peel extract continue after the end of the 20 or 30 day period? In other words, is any cure temporary (only for the 20 or 30 days), or does the cure last longer (after taking the orange peel extract is discontinued) and, if so, how long?

    Thanks.

I have tried Refluxamine - seemed to help - however the cost of some of these herbs are quite a bit especially when you have to add shipping costs on top. Is there anyplace in Manitoba that might carry some of these herbs. I have asked this before but never seem to get a response from you. Thank you.

The recommended dosage for Heartburn Free (link above) is one capsule every other day for 20 days and then one as needed after that. How long you would need to contine taking the capsules would depend on your particular symptoms.

To find out if particular treatments are available in your area the best place to start might be your local health store. If you ask for what you want they may be able to order it in for you. I’m afraid I don’t know of where you can go in Manitoba

I have had a battle with acid reflux until a MO ago I started drinking 2 oz aloa vera gel every night before bed and in the morn I drink 4 oz of fefir with apples in the blender. I am doing so great I cant believe it.I also have the bed wedge.I am living now and am eating better I even had Mex. food but take it easy on the aloa for you need to do that slow or you can get diarrea. The Aloa is very inexpensive for 2 Mo. it was only about 10.00 Great . Diana Childress

    Hello,

I have been suffering from chronic acid reflux for the last 5 years and wonder where I can find the orange peel extract in Kabul, Afghanistan. I have used a lot of medication that have failed to cure and relieve it. I am very eager in trying natural remedies.

    Best regards,
